MK Superhero Run 2017

It’s not uncommon to see hundreds of people running the streets in short shorts, vests and even a bit of Lycra these days as 5k’s, half marathons and marathons are more popular than ever. Every year the May bank holiday weekend sees all of these races take place in the city of Milton Keynes but what is a bit different is the amazing sight of 1200 boys, girls, men and women all dressed as superheroes ‘flying’ up the road outside Stadium MK before entering it for a spectacular finish.

This is a fun run that lives up to it’s meaning in every possible way. Superhero fancy dress costumes are essential and that’s embraced by almost every participant with some going the extra mile with elaborate outfits that look like they’ve come straight from a Hollywood firm set.

The run attracts a huge range of people. Children of all ages from toddlers to teens battling it out for the podium places where prizes are on offer. Babies in buggies being pushed by their parents (superhero clad of course), families of all ages running together and what was also great to see was lots of carers pushing participants with disabilities in wheelchairs. Everyone had a massive smile on their face.

The course was flat, started and finished in the same places as the half and full marathon and was just the right distance for the wide range of entrances at 1.5 miles. It was an out and back route along the closed road surrounding the football ground then a run down the concourse and into the home of the MK Dons before completing three quarters of a lap around the pitch and under the finishing arch where supporters where gathered cheering on from the stands. The final stages were also captured live on the huge screen.

All that was left to cap off a great morning was receiving a medal and this one was a cracker.
